Translation & Interpretation In Conflict Zones
Translation & Interpretation In Conflict Zones
Having recently celebrated Remembrance Day in Canada, we thought we’d bring some attention to translation and interpretation in conflict zones. Translators and interpreters play a crucial role in conflict zones, despite the fact that they may not always be recognized for it.

Interpreters and translators put themselves in harms way to ensure that a bridge is built between cultures and people. Their role will bring understanding to the culture, language and area, in the hopes of helping as many people in danger as possible.

Some of the common ways translators and interpreters have been used in past wars and conflict zones have been to spy or eavesdrop, command orders, crack codes, and ultimately save lives.

It is common for people who are in these situations to be non-professional interpreters and translators, as they are often local people where the conflict is occurring. But this doesn’t discount their efforts or the benefits of their services. In fact, the AIIC along with other organizations has released a guidebook on how to protect Translators and Interpreters. This book also acts as a guideline to how they should act in return. The guidebook outlines the responsibilities of the translators or interpreter and also how you can work with them for success.

Translation and interpretation in conflict zones, is just one more way translators and interpreters make a difference in the world – not matter how big or small.
